John Perry is currently the director of tennis of Smith-Perry Tennis Academy and Tucson Tennis Management, in charge of running Reffkin Tennis Center (formerly Randolph Tennis Center), the USTA National Tennis Facility of the Year for 2022. John has been at Reffkin for over 26 years, and has been a USPTA professional since 1996, serving as the Southern Arizona USPTA District Representative and USPTA Southwest Treasurer from 2020-2023. John was awarded the USPTA Industry Excellence Award in 2019 and named the Southwest USPTA Professional of the Year in 2022.
John travels throughout the year to nearly all the major tennis events in the Southwest as a coach of players at every level including ATP professional, ITF Wheelchair professional, USTA nationally ranked juniors, high school and adult tournament and league players. John has coached many top juniors including dozens of #1 ranked Southwest players and 26 individual high school state champions. In 2022, John was a credential coach at the US Open.
John has been heavily involved in volunteering with the USTA for the past decade in all areas of junior tennis, promoting and growing 10 and under tennis in the Southwest. He has given numerous presentations to parents, coaches, and officials on rules and sportsmanship for the past 7 years. He was presented with the USTA Tournament Enrichment Award for his work with the Tucson Slam Series entry level events. John also holds 2 tennis related Guinness World Records, recognized officially in 2020. In 2023 John was named the USTA Tennis Ambassador of the Year
John’s specialty is the mental game of tennis, having completed a master’s degree in sport psychology from the University of Arizona. Prior to that he attained a bachelor’s degree in psychology from New Mexico State University where he was a member of the tennis team, playing number one singles and doubles. John was the New Mexico High School State singles champion in 1989. Currently he has been competing in USTA league tennis for the past 15 years, advancing to Nationals 3 times at the 5.0 level. John was ranked #1 in the USTA Southwest and #9 Nationally in Men’s Open Doubles in 2021 and has been ranked #1 in the Southwest in Father-Son Doubles in 2022 and 2023.
John has been married to his wife Janelle for over 27 years. They have three sons, Brendan, Jared, and Stefan. They received the USTA Southwest Tennis Family of the Year award in 2018.
