History of the Hall of Fame
The hall of fame has been a work in progress and on the Southwest Division’s back burner for a while now. Originally, we had planned to host our inaugural hall of fame in 2020 but then COVID came along and changed everything! But in 2022 the Southwest Division Board thought it was time to start a hall of fame for the division. Dave Moyer, past president of the Southwest Division had been working with Jack Michalko, the Southwest Executive Director on this project for years and Dave became the perfect choice to head the USPTA, Southwest Division Hall of Fame committee. Moyer chose the current USTA Southwest President at that time (2022), Paul Burns, who is also a USPTA Southwest Pro and had lots of hall of fame experience along with Brett Hall, former USPTA Southwest President to round out his committee. They developed the criteria for induction into our hall of fame which is:
The USPTA Southwest Division Hall of Fame honors those individuals, who by excellence of their activities and accomplishments, have brought recognition and esteem to themselves and to the USPTA organization.
Eligibility:
· Applications must be made in writing and submitted to the HOF Committee (the committee gives much more credence to nominations that come from others, rather than the nominee.)
· One candidate will be chosen each year based on the following criteria:
o Must be a member of the USPTA Southwest in good standing for a minimum of 10 years.
o Involvement in USPTA at the local, state, sectional and/or national level
o Teaching and/or coaching accomplishments
o Playing accomplishments
o Publications/innovations
o Involvement in allied organizations; and other contributions to the teaching profession and the promotion of tennis.
· The committee may also consider a nominee who is nominated posthumously in addition to the one candidate per year.
Our first inductees were Dick Johnson, Jim Reffkin and Jack Michalko. You must be a current member of the association to be on the committee, but you do not have to be a current member to be selected for the Hall of Fame.
Any certified member can nominate a Southern Division member or past member, provided they meet the requirements, to be considered for the hall of fame but the above criteria must apply.
